Prawn fishing in Alaska.
We pull the Prawn traps and prepare Live Prawn's right
on board.
Fishing Techniques for Salmon Fishing
Our salmon fishing techniques are quite different on the
Sunshine Coast than most areas, we Mooch for the Salmon,
this means we locate the bait fish with sounders and
anchor the vessel over the bait fish and use live
herring, the natural food for the Salmon. We use 10 ft
light salmon rods with a 3 ounce weight, about 8ft of
light leader and a single #10 treble hook in the nose of
the herring. This offers a natural light tackle fishing
method for the Salmon and is a fun way to fish for these
powerful fish.
Ocean Conditions - Georgia Strait, Secret Cove
Our area offers relatively protected waters for sport
fishing on Georgia Strait because Vancouver Island
protects this area from the rough water, the numerous
islands also protect us, where you are not subject to
the high seas of the Pacific Ocean (no swells or
fog)Most summer days the water is relatively calm with
light westerly winds.
What to expect in Weather Conditions
Temperatures on the Sunshine Coast range from freezing
in winter to highs of 30+C (90F) in summer. The annual
rainfall is about 100cm (40 inches). The Sunshine Coast
boasts 14 more days of sunshine per year than HAWAII.
The Sunshine Coast has approximately 270 growing days
per year. Areas such as Davis Bay and Wilson Creek
support growth of tropical trees & shrubs such as palm,
eucalyptus, apricot and fig.
Summer Month's ( June thru August )
Secret Cove enjoys warm, comfortable summers that are
rarely scorching but can get up to 29 degrees Celsius
(85° Fahrenheit), it seldom rains but a shower can
happen. June to August daytime temperatures linger just
above 20° Celsius (70° Fahrenheit). Evenings, especially
close to the Ocean, and the mornings before the sun is
up are a bit cooler so it's best to pack a light jacket
and sweater.
Fall Month's ( Sept. thru November )
Autumn on the coast is very mild with summer-like
weather often stretching into October, fall can be quite
wonderful on the Sunshine Coast. By November, the air
turns crisper in the mornings and the leaves have
started to fall. Bring warm, waterproof clothing if you
are visiting at this time of year.
Winter Month's ( Dec. thru February )
Our winters are mild and wet-it rarely snows in this
part of Canada except, of course, at our local ski
hills. The Sunshine Coast, they say, is so named because
it's sunnier than Vancouver. From November to February,
temperatures average from 0° to 5° Celsius (around 45°
Fahrenheit). The Rain generally starts in November and
lasts until March and it does occasionally snow during
the winter. To stay cozy and dry, you'll need warm
clothes, a raincoat and an umbrella. Waterproof footwear
is always a good idea.
Spring Month's ( March thru May )
The fresh spring air blows in early to our seaside Cove.
Spring generally means a mix of warm, sunny and rainy
days.February or March start to see the early crocuses
and daffodils popping up, quickly followed by an
eruption of spring blossoms. Active locals suddenly
emerge from hibernation. Temperatures average from 13°
to 16° Celsius (around 55° to 60° Fahrenheit) Pack light
clothing along with a few sweaters for good measure.
What to Bring on your Trip
Be sure to dress warmly and in layers, the mornings are
cool even in the summer. White-soled running shoes or
other non-marking footwear (soft-soled). Sunglasses and
camera, with lots of film to record your catch of the
day. On our fisherman special package lunches are not
included, so bring a lunch and beverage. You can bring
Beer if you wish. You will need a BC Saltwater fishing
license with a Salmon Stamp, this can be purchased in
advance at most BC fishing tackle outlets or you can
purchase when you arrive. Don't forget a cooler to
transport your catch, or we have styro coolers at the
marina that work well even if you flying home.
Fishing Licenses - Saltwater
You must have a tidal waters sport fishing license to
sport fish. When fishing, immediately record Retained
Chinook Salmon and Lingcod on your Licence in ink. Your
fishing licence is not included in your packages but are
available in Secret Cove.
